Malabar Biryani
മലബാർ ബിരിയാണിبرياني مالابار
Slow-dum rice layered with spiced meat and caramelised onions. The Malabar way — no shortcuts, no powder masalas. Opened at the table, never in the kitchen.
مطبخ كيرالي أصيل في البحرين
Slow-dum Malabar biryani, karimeen pollichathu wrapped in banana leaf, beef porotta and a hundred Kerala flavours — right here in Salmaniya. And when the family gathers, our party hall is yours.
Kalavara was born from a simple truth: the Kerala expatriate community in Bahrain deserved food that felt like home. Not adapted, not approximated — the real thing. Slow-dum biryani cooked the Malabar way. Karimeen wrapped in banana leaf and charcoal-roasted. Appam with a lace edge and coconut stew that smells like a grandmother's kitchen in Kottayam.
Word spread beyond the Malayalam-speaking diaspora. Today, Kalavara draws food lovers from across Bahrain — Arab families, South Indian professionals, Filipinos, British expats — all drawn by the same thing: honest cooking, generous portions, and a kitchen that never cuts corners.

A private hall with its own entrance, alongside the main restaurant. Custom menus from the same kitchen — Arabic spreads, sadhya, biryani buckets, Continental sit-downs. Weddings, engagements, corporate dinners and the long family dinners that stretch past midnight.
The kitchen principle"Cook it the way a Malabar household cooks it — slow, honest, and with the right ingredients — and Bahrain will keep coming back."
A warm welcome in Malayalam and Arabic. Every table receives the day's fish and biryani specials on a handwritten card.
Dum biryani arrives sealed in dough. Karimeen comes in its banana leaf. Porotta basket. Curries in clay.
Tiger prawns, fish moilee, crab masala — the sea menu changes with what came in fresh. Ask the server what the kitchen recommends.
Ada pradhaman or palada payasam — the Kerala ending. Followed by Malabar sulaimani or ginger tea.

Diners from across the GCC come to Kalavara for the same reasons: consistency, authenticity and value. Slow-dum biryani, fresh Kerala seafood, and a full party hall for the days the whole family gathers — all in Salmaniya, Manama.
Marinated overnight, fried in pure coconut oil, steamed inside a sealed pot or set on a slow-burn grill. The same masalas, the same timing, every day.
Short-grain rice layered with fried onions, saffron-milk, ghee and mint. Sealed under dough and steamed — then opened at your table, slowly.
Cuts fresh from the market each morning. Whole fish charred to order, tiger prawns, fish moilee, crab masala — the sea menu follows the catch.
